Are you a candidate for public office in 2012?
Do you know someone who has announced they are a candidate?
Hiram Rhodes Revels (September 27, 1822 – January 16, 1901) was the first Black American to serve in
the United States Senate. Since he preceded any African American in the House, he was the first Black
American in the U.S. Congress as well. He represented Mississippi in 1870 and 1871 during Reconstruction.
As of 2009, Revels was one of only six Black Americans ever to have served in the United States Senate.
